Where do we go?

First Strip    Previous trip    Next Strip    Latest Strip

Another thing that both AJ and I have noticed is that in RPG's when you want to find something (say on a quest to find something) you are required to ask the whole town where it might be. Morrowind is probably one of the biggest offenders of this. Thus you spend 15 minutes to an hour talking to people who are telling you the exact same thing over and over, when by the first guy, you know the exact location of where the quest is taking you.

Another thing I'd thought I'd mention. AJ and I have started dinking around in Starcraft the past week. I know we're about 10 years too late, but it's been fun. AJ hadn't played until last week, and I had only played a few times. He plays Terran, I play Zerg. But it gave me thought to the differences between Starcraft and AoE and which are actually good.

The first difference is that there are only 2 resources in Starcraft, these resources can be incredibly limiting. Age of Empires you have to gather 4 all of which (except maybe stone) are relatively abundant. The other main difference is the types of units. Because Starcraft is fantasy and Age of Empires is supposed to be real time, Starcraft allows for invisibility and spells. This allows for a little more freedom in the commanding of armies. You don't just make 100 cavalry and and 10 trebuchets to destroy everyone in Starcraft. You can, and it can be effective, but by that point it seems that everyone has the highest technology.

I think I enjoy Starcraft more then Age of Empires. I do think there are a few things that can be learned from AoE but I considering that Starcraft is 1 year older than Age of Empires 2, I'll have to hold off until the second one comes out... That is except that I'll have to pay 150 big ones to play it completely.

====EDIT====
Beta's right, I apologize, I think there are a few things that AoE did better than starcraft, but the pace of the game (especially against fellow humans) feels much slower than starcraft and I feel like lessens the excitement of AoE.

  1. That is an exact quest chain from Neverwinter Nights 2. "Yar, thankee fer savin' mah hide! Have ye heard aboot the cave?"

  2. Starcraft is not 7 years older then AOE 2... Starcraft was released in 1998 and AOE 2 in 1999. The expansion was released in 2000.

    Don't get me wrong, Starcraft is one of the best RTS's ever, but it sounds like we need to play some more AOE. ;)

  4. The original 1997 AoE was very exciting and felt fast paced at the time. It probably depends a lot on who you played against.
