DnD is a fickle game. You can do anything you want in it (provided you don't have an overly controlling dungeon master) and expect to have consequences for your actions. Most people I play with are the most comfortable role-playing as a good character. They try to follow the morals that they themselves grew up with. However, every now and then you come across one guy who decides to push the envelope of your little campaign. These are the people who are some of the most fun to play with because they help build the story, rather than playing it by Judeo-Christian ideals.
Experience points are what matter to the DnD player. It's all about leveling up your character while enjoying the mind of the dungeon master who has pieced together the story arc of a lifetime (or weekend). At the end of the session, no one likes to wait for experience points. Everyone clamors for more. So if you can get your experience in a way that the other characters can't, that makes you especially powerful. Hence, situations like this arise.

So you have a thing for bad boys...
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, my morality is purely rewards based. Usually you'll get more from a quest by actually saving the princess than feeding her to the dragon.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's a comment from our new DM... I wonder how you and JJ are going to get along...
ReplyDeleteDangle enough loot on the end of a stick and your adventurers will follow you anywhere.
