Deus Ex

First Strip    Previous Strip    Next Strip    Latest Strip

In case you've never noticed, a Deus ex Machina (that's latin) happens throughout literature. It didn't stop with the Greek tragedies, from whence the phrase was coined, nor did it die with Shakespeare. A Deus Ex can be anything that's out of the natural order of the literary piece without which the plot could not conclude. Or if you wish to get technical it's a plot device in which a person or thing appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty.

Like I said, this still happens today, in the Andromeda Strain or War of the Worlds, or even Nic Cage's hair in The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Needless to say, this is my Deus Ex Machina
